Free Post

This Thanksgiving break was a refreshing break from all of the stress from school and extracurricular activities. I didn't have to worry about getting home late from football and stressing over hour of homework. I was finally able to do what I wanted. As soon as I  got home I put on pajamas and made sure to grab a blanket for a nice, comfortable sleep. I woke up late that morning to an empty house, but that was fine for me.

A few days later I was beginning to get bored of doing nothing all day so decided to go Black Friday shopping with a couple of friends. There was a special deal that I wanted to get at Best Buy. There was a pair of wireless beats that were 200 dollars off that I couldn't help but snatch. I was expecting a big group of people to steal them from me, but somehow nobody knew about the deal.

LOTF quote

Golding portrays an odd rivalry between two brotherly characters, Ralph and Jack, that leads to dangerous situations which cause the story to turn and unfold the way it does. One event that clearly shows the rivalry between the two boys is when Jack and his fellow hunters forget to tend to the fire. Jack apologizes saying "We needed meat" [page 71]. This causes the ship to pass by without seeing the fire and makes Jack angry. It is the beginning a rivalry that will end in death.

LOTF response

The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.  Once there was this and that; and now--and the ship had gone. [... Jack refusing to give Piggy the floor when he has the conch...]
"The rules!" shouted Ralph.  "You're breaking the rules!"
"Who cares?"
Ralph summoned his wits.
"Because the rules are the only thing we've got!"
But Jack was shouting against him.
"Bollocks to the rules!  We're strong--we hunt!  If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down!  We'll close in and beat and beat and beat--!" (91)

This passage depicts a widening gap between order and chaos. When the characters arrived on this island, everyone was so innocent and full of excitement. Jack and Ralph were excited to explore this wonderful island with plenty of fruit and adventures just waiting for them. They came on this island still a civilized group of people, but they would soon lose their old personalities to savages who wanted nothing other than bloodlust.

The problems would begin to arise when Jack refused to listen to rules and was tearing down the only order they had. Every day the characters slowly realized their chances of returning home were slim. These horrible realizations caused the group to crumble from within. The characters feared the beast so much that they hadn’t known that the fear itself of the beast was turning them into one. The once beautiful island with innocent little children became more like a prison containing bloodthirsty killers.

Symbolism

Cameron woke up early that day. He quietly traveled down to the attic and opened up a dark, wooden cabinet he hadn’t opened since the accident. It contained nothing but a black object filled with memories of dread. Cameron traveled back upstairs to where his little brother, Greyson, slept. Cameron wondered whether or not he should wake him up.

He decided that this was an event his little brother needed to see. Cameron gently shook him awake and told him that today was the day. Greyson saw the black object with his gray eyes and nodded his head. They got in the car and made there way to Florida, where their father used to live. They didn’t spoken a word the entire 5 hour journey. They step out of the car and unscrew the top of the black object. Together they let the cool wind scatter the ashes.

The black object represents an urn that contained the ashes of their deceased father.

Vocabulary Free Post: Pancakes or Waffles

I have been burdened to answer the most difficult question that exists worldwide. What is better, pancakes or waffles? In order to answer such a difficult question, we must truly understand the key differences between these two similar delicacies. A waffle is batter that has been baked and later toasted into a crisp cake with square indentations to provide space for syrup to fill. Syrup is a  sap that is secreted from trees and later sweetend for a tasty flavor, and it is used on both waffles and pancakes.

Pancakes are a more simple version of waffles but still taste great. Pancakes are created by pouring batter onto a hot surface and forming circular cakes. However, pancakes do not have any indentations for syrup to fill. I know you are thinking that waffles clearly have an advantage over pancakes with a superior method of retaining syrup, but there is a catch. In order for waffles to have these square patterns, they must be cooked in a waffle maker instead of by hand. Pancakes are delicately made by people with supreme cooking skills that always trump machines. So it all comes down to preference, would you rather have a machine made waffle that can hold syrup effectively, or would you rather have a homemade pancake where syrup slides off.

LOTF response

LOTF reveals what true human nature is by sticking a group of preteens and young children onto an island without adults. Today's world almost hides what true human nature is behind the media, politics, phones, and just technology in general. Without all of these distractions present, the true human core shows its ugly face. LOTF doesn't immediately show a group of kids turn into beasts, it shows a progression.

Over time, the kids stray further and further from their sanity. They slowly begin to forget who they were and become savages. All of the characters have this happen to them at different rates based on their personality. Jack quickly loses his humanity and becomes a bloodthirsty hunter. Ralph is slow to change, but he is slowing morphing into a different person.
