LOTF response

The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.  Once there was this and that; and now--and the ship had gone. [... Jack refusing to give Piggy the floor when he has the conch...]
"The rules!" shouted Ralph.  "You're breaking the rules!"
"Who cares?"
Ralph summoned his wits.
"Because the rules are the only thing we've got!"
But Jack was shouting against him.
"Bollocks to the rules!  We're strong--we hunt!  If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down!  We'll close in and beat and beat and beat--!" (91)

This passage depicts a widening gap between order and chaos. When the characters arrived on this island, everyone was so innocent and full of excitement. Jack and Ralph were excited to explore this wonderful island with plenty of fruit and adventures just waiting for them. They came on this island still a civilized group of people, but they would soon lose their old personalities to savages who wanted nothing other than bloodlust.

The problems would begin to arise when Jack refused to listen to rules and was tearing down the only order they had. Every day the characters slowly realized their chances of returning home were slim. These horrible realizations caused the group to crumble from within. The characters feared the beast so much that they hadn’t known that the fear itself of the beast was turning them into one. The once beautiful island with innocent little children became more like a prison containing bloodthirsty killers.
