Golding portrays an odd rivalry between two brotherly characters,
Ralph and Jack, that leads to dangerous situations which cause the story to
turn and unfold the way it does. One event that clearly shows the rivalry between the two boys is when Jack and his fellow hunters forget to tend to the fire. Jack apologizes saying "We needed meat" [page 71]. This causes the ship to pass by without seeing the fire and makes Jack angry. It is the beginning a rivalry that will end in death.
