Symbolism

Cameron woke up early that day. He quietly traveled down to the attic and opened up a dark, wooden cabinet he hadn’t opened since the accident. It contained nothing but a black object filled with memories of dread. Cameron traveled back upstairs to where his little brother, Greyson, slept. Cameron wondered whether or not he should wake him up.

He decided that this was an event his little brother needed to see. Cameron gently shook him awake and told him that today was the day. Greyson saw the black object with his gray eyes and nodded his head. They got in the car and made there way to Florida, where their father used to live. They didn’t spoken a word the entire 5 hour journey. They step out of the car and unscrew the top of the black object. Together they let the cool wind scatter the ashes.

The black object represents an urn that contained the ashes of their deceased father.

  1. This is a really beautiful story. Your use of symbolism was very subtle and creative, and I really liked how it didn't feel forced.
